Five Vietnamese specialties worth taking home

Coffee, cashews, lacquerware, silk and lotus tea: the gifts that travel well, keep well and say something genuine about Vietnam.

The best souvenir is one that still feels special a month after the trip. These five Vietnamese products are easy to carry, allowed through customs almost everywhere, and available sealed and travel-ready at airport duty-free shops.

1. Robusta and arabica coffee

Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee producer. Look for single-origin beans from the Central Highlands or a classic dark roast made for the phin filter. Ground coffee in a vacuum pack keeps its aroma for months.

2. Cashew nuts from Binh Phuoc

Large, sweet and roasted with a little salt or with the skin left on for extra crunch. Vacuum-sealed tins are light in the suitcase and survive long flights without breaking.

3. Lacquerware

Boxes, trays and small bowls finished with layers of natural lacquer and eggshell or mother-of-pearl inlay. Choose pieces with smooth edges and a certificate of origin; they are safe in hand luggage.

4. Silk scarves and áo dài fabric

Vietnamese silk is light, breathable and folds flat. A scarf is the classic gift; a length of fabric lets the recipient have something made at home.

5. Lotus tea

Green tea scented with lotus flowers from the West Lake area of Hanoi. It is delicate, so buy a sealed tin rather than a loose bag, and store it away from coffee.

Tip: all five are dry goods, so they are not subject to the liquid limits at security and rarely need a customs declaration.
