Whisky, wine and cognac: a beginner’s duty-free guide

What the labels mean, which bottles are genuinely better value at the airport, and how to carry them home without a broken suitcase.

Spirits are where duty-free earns its name: excise taxes on alcohol are among the highest of any product, so the saving against high-street prices is real. If you are new to the category, a few basics make the choice easier.

Reading the label

  • Scotch whisky – “single malt” comes from one distillery; “blended” combines several. Age statements (12, 18 years) refer to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
  • Cognac – VS, VSOP and XO indicate minimum ageing of two, four and ten years respectively.
  • Wine – look for the region and vintage; airport ranges focus on well-known appellations that travel well.

Litre bottles and travel exclusives

Many spirits are sold in 1-litre bottles only in travel retail, which usually gives the best price per millilitre. Check that a litre still fits your destination’s allowance; in Vietnam the limit for strong spirits is 1.5 litres per adult.

Carrying bottles safely

Bottles bought after security travel in the cabin in the sealed bag. If you must check them in, wrap each bottle in clothing in the centre of the case, or ask the shop for a protective sleeve. Never pack glass against the suitcase wall.

Buy on arrival when you can: the bottle goes straight from the shop to your car, with no flight in between.

Please drink responsibly. Alcohol is sold only to travellers aged 18 and over.
